Sorrento, Italy - The Gateway to the Wonders of Southern Italy
Published Friday, August 11th 2017 - Updated Friday, August 11th 2017Sorrento is a beautiful, coastal town overlooking the Bay of Naples. It is a great base for exploring some of the regions highlights - Pompeii (Mt. Vesuvius) , Capri, and the world-renowned Amalfi Coast.
... And if you love limoncello, this is the spot to be. It is not uncommon to find a lemon tree in every corner.
Luxury Hotel Recommendation - Grand Hotel Ambasciatori
- Great location in Sorrento - walking distance to Piazza Tasso (where you can find lots of cute shops and restaurants).
- Clean & charming rooms.
- Private "beach" area for hotel guests - breathtaking views!
- Friendly staff and great customer service.
Side note: If you're willing to pay more for a sea view room, it is totally worth it!
Restaurant recommendation - Bagni Delfino
- Seafood restaurant by the Port of Marina Grande. If you like seafood, it doesn't get fresher than this place! Not to mention, the views and staff are incredible.
My favorite day trip from Sorrento was visiting the magical island of Capri. The island offers stunning rock formations and natural grottos (most famous for the blue grotto). If you have a nice size group, I recommend chartering a boat to really explore the island. We had our captain take us to a wonderful restaurant right on the water called La Fontelina for lunch. The views were unbeatable and the food was delicious. The restaurant also has an exclusive "beach club" where you can rent a lounger chair for the day and take a swim in the crystal, clear water.
Final Thoughts: If you don't want to deal with hopping around hotels but you still want to see as much as possible, stay in Sorrento. The town in and of itself is wonderful and the location makes it easy to explore the "must sees" of the region.
